Facebook (Privacy and Security)

Facebook, the world's largest social network, has reached over 1.44 billion monthly active users worldwide. Facebook collects data on all those who use Facebook age, gender, interests, country of residence etc. As consumer Reports released its annual report on Internet privacy and security, Facebook privacy problems are on the rise.

For example, Facebook company has inadvertently exposed 6 million users' phone numbers email and addresses to unauthorized viewers over the past year, the world's largest social networking company disclosed late Friday (Gerry, 2013). In 2012, Facebook began to blame the data leaks on a technical glitch in their massive archive of related information collected from their 1.1 billion users worldwide. Afterward, the Facebook users who were not supposed to have when they downloaded contact data from their list of friends obtained additional information. It seems that Facebook collects more data than our may imagine. For instance, we cannot know that Facebook gets a report every time when you visit a site with a Facebook “Like” button, even if you never click the button, are not a Facebook user, or are not logged in. The problems are on the rise with eleven percent of households using Facebook said they had trouble last year, ranging from someone using their log-in without permission to being harassed or threatened (The projects to 7 million households — 30 percent more than last year). As the customer report, the Facebook provide consumers’ options and tools that place them in control of their information and experience attracted access more than 900 million consumers have voluntarily decided to connect and share on Facebook.

It seems that users can also do more to protect their privacy and security on Facebook. There are several ways for them, costumers should think before them type because even if they delete an account (which takes Facebook about a month), some information can remain in Facebook’s computers for up to 90 days. Moreover, knowing what they cannot protect is also necessary to protect their identity and do not use a photo or use one that doesn’t show your face since their name and profile picture are public.  Turning off Tag Suggest because if we would rather not have Facebook automatically recognize your face in photos, disable that feature in our privacy settings. The information will be deleted. Importantly, when we deactivate our account, Facebook retains our profile data, but the account is made temporarily inaccessible. Therefore, deleting an account, on the other hand, makes it inaccessible to us forever. However, it is nice to see that Facebook make efforts to simplify privacy settings and improve security that as well settle allegations from the Federal Trade Commission and submit to independent audits for the next 20 years (Rosa, 2012).

Facebook (History and Development)

In today’s society, social media has emerged as a catalyst for global change, with Facebook playing a key organizing roles in uprisings worldwide. Mark Zuckerberg who is a keen computer programmer, 23, founded Facebook while studying psychology at Harvard University. In February 2004 Mr. Zuckerberg launched "The Facebook"(Facebook’s original name). Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had signed up, and after one month, over half of the undergraduate population had a profile. Facebook expanded the list of approved networks as soon as possible, in order to allow to reach a wider range of users since it allowed access to 1 million active users at the end of 2004.
As of 2005, Facebook allowed access to over 800 college and university networks as well as high-school networks (Arrington, 2005). The network was promptly extended to other universities, as of September 2006, the network was extended beyond educational institutions to anyone with a registered email address and with rumored figures of around $2billion (£975million) being discussed by Yahoo and Google. The site's features have continued to develop during 2007 and the company announced that the number of registered users had reached 30 million, making it the largest social-networking site with an education focus. In March 2010, Facebook troughs Google to become the most visited website in the United States and then account for 7.07% of all U.S. web traffic (Dougherty, 2010).

Moreover, there are over 80% of current Facebooks’ users residing outside of the country by Facebook’s dominance extends well beyond the United States. As of February 2012, Facebook's first earnings report just barely beats investor expectations since Facebook had over 845 million users (more than the population of Europe) who spent more than 9.7 billion minutes per day on this site (Facebook, 2012; Rusli, 2012; For a description of Facebook). Actually, after the creation in February 2004, Facebook has gradually become a spectacular success and creates a massive new domain in which millions of social interactions that are played out every day. Despite only about
3,000 employees work for Facebook worldwide, Facebook has an amazing value at around $100 billion U.S. dollars. (Facebook, 2012; Gertner, 2011; Siegler, 2011, Swartz, 2012). As January of 2013, Facebook introduced Graph Search to help users find out more about what they're looking for based on their friends and connections. As of 2014, Facebook saw a 63 percent increase in revenue, with more than half of its $2.6 billion in Q4 revenue coming from mobile advertising on smartphones, iPads, and other mobile devices. It seems that with mobile engagement up, Facebook's future looks bright. Nowadays, with over 800 million users, Facebook is changing the way about hundreds of millions of people connect to one another and share information each other. It seems that Facebook has become a way of life for a lot of people.

In 2011, Evan Spiegel with friends of Stanford University, Robert Murphy and Reggie Brown, made the prototype Picaboo of the Snapchat product. Three people based on this idea designed the disappearing photos function application, Picaboo.

Open the software, in the lower left corner of the interface, has a timing pattern, you can set the number of seconds. Suppose you take a picture and set up for 7 seconds to a contact. The contact sees the photo after 7 seconds, and it will automatically disappear, which will not spread the privacy information to the Internet.

Picaboo's secrecy has become a tool for many young people to pass on each other's private pictures and information. Facebook's prototype Facemash is also successfully attracted the younger generation.
